deputy and current village Party secretary Cheng Ju bravely returned to her hometown in recent years to help locals shake off poverty.

Cheng, in her 20s, comes from Dashi village in Xianning, central China's Hubei Province.

Cheng previously worked at Guangzhou Alibaba International Station in south China's Guangdong Province. She went back to her hometown with a determination to lead villagers.

There are some 300 families in Dashi. But most youngsters there have migrated for better-paid work, only leaving five young people living in the village.

"Four out of the five young people were new moms. Then, I thought of Cheng Ju. She is a college graduate and has some bright ideas," said Wang Wanlong, a former official of Dashi.

After being elected as Dashi's secretary, Cheng summarized in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the area’s development.

She even made a three-step development strategy, which aims to enhance infrastructure, then develop industries and tourism.

Cheng eventually raised a large amount of funds for the project, which she used to transform 1.7 kilometers of roads and reinforce 1.2 kilometers of riverbanks.

Cheng also arranged for the construction of a 400 square meters solar power base and a 10 hectares green tea plantation. Her schemes also introduced a 20 hectare freshwater lobster breeding base with an annual output over U.S.$ 210,000.

Cheng has persuaded many more young people to come back to Dashi nowadays, too.

In 2017, the average income of Dashi villagers reached U.S.$ 2,000, successfully eliminating poverty.
